Chapter Nine
Sabrina had noticed the man earlier. Judging from his camera, he was likely a reporter. She knew this was going to happen, part of her role to draw attention and funds to Boxwood. She didnât mind after having dealt with actual, uninvited transgressions.
âThis was beautiful,â she said to Misty as they walked along the stands of the Christmas market, admiring glass and wood creations.
âIt is. At least no one can take that away from Boxwood.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âLori heard that our investor is coming to town. Weâre not sure why. He hasnât been around much since we all signed the contract.â Misty shrugged. âIt might not mean anything, but I think he put in that money on a whim. Perhaps he didnât know what to realistically expect from a town like Boxwood. He could take it away again.â
He was about toâ¦So Donovan hadnât talked to her yet, and she didnât even know he was already in town. Why? What was his deal? Sabrina couldnât imagine he didnât know what he had gotten himself into. After all, heâd grown up in Boxwood too.
âWould that be such a horrible thing in the long run?â Sabrina cringed at the surprise in Mistyâs expression. âI mean you said it yourself. No one knows whatâs going to happen once the train stops running, right?â
âSure, but thatâs not a reason to give up. Besides, Lori and I have put everything into this. Our lives are here. We have nothing to fall back on.â
There might have been a small jibe in that sentence, but Mistyâs tone didnât reflect it, so Sabrina decided not to dwell. In fact, she had an idea. Sheâd have to talk to Ethan again before she could share it with Mistyâ¦but it might just work if he wasnât interested in maintaining a small-town business. There was a chance each of them could get out of it what they hoped for.
âYouâd just need another investor instead,â she suggested.
âYou say that like itâs an easy thing to achieve.â
âI donât know, it might be. Letâs focus on the train for a momentâ¦The booth at the tree lighting raised more money than we imagined.â
âYes, butâ¦â
âWe have to find a way to come up with more. If we can save the train, we wonât have to worry about the inn.â
âWe,â Misty repeated, sounding pensive and hopeful.
âYes, we. Iâm all in, remember?â
Sabrina hadnât expected Mistyâs arms around her the next moment, but she didnât mind, grateful they were on the same page. For the most part, anyway. She held on, remembering the moment on the ice rink once more. Some difficult conversations still lay ahead, but she felt a little more confident about handling them. She couldnât wait for the next time they were alone together, a moment when they wouldnât have to talk business or raising money.
By Christmas, at the latest.
All in.
âThere you are.â Loriâs voice startled them apart. âWhoâs ready for some mulled wine?â

At times, it was still unreal to Misty that the
