Chapter Nine

Sabrina had noticed the man earlier. Judging from his camera, he was likely a reporter. She knew this was going to happen, part of her role to draw attention and funds to Boxwood. She didn’t mind after having dealt with actual, uninvited transgressions.

“This was beautiful,” she said to Misty as they walked along the stands of the Christmas market, admiring glass and wood creations.

“It is. At least no one can take that away from Boxwood.”

“What do you mean?”

“Lori heard that our investor is coming to town. We’re not sure why. He hasn’t been around much since we all signed the contract.” Misty shrugged. “It might not mean anything, but I think he put in that money on a whim. Perhaps he didn’t know what to realistically expect from a town like Boxwood. He could take it away again.”

He was about to…So Donovan hadn’t talked to her yet, and she didn’t even know he was already in town. Why? What was his deal? Sabrina couldn’t imagine he didn’t know what he had gotten himself into. After all, he’d grown up in Boxwood too.

“Would that be such a horrible thing in the long run?” Sabrina cringed at the surprise in Misty’s expression. “I mean you said it yourself. No one knows what’s going to happen once the train stops running, right?”

“Sure, but that’s not a reason to give up. Besides, Lori and I have put everything into this. Our lives are here. We have nothing to fall back on.”

There might have been a small jibe in that sentence, but Misty’s tone didn’t reflect it, so Sabrina decided not to dwell. In fact, she had an idea. She’d have to talk to Ethan again before she could share it with Misty…but it might just work if he wasn’t interested in maintaining a small-town business. There was a chance each of them could get out of it what they hoped for.

“You’d just need another investor instead,” she suggested.

“You say that like it’s an easy thing to achieve.”

“I don’t know, it might be. Let’s focus on the train for a moment…The booth at the tree lighting raised more money than we imagined.”

“Yes, but…”

“We have to find a way to come up with more. If we can save the train, we won’t have to worry about the inn.”

“We,” Misty repeated, sounding pensive and hopeful.

“Yes, we. I’m all in, remember?”

Sabrina hadn’t expected Misty’s arms around her the next moment, but she didn’t mind, grateful they were on the same page. For the most part, anyway. She held on, remembering the moment on the ice rink once more. Some difficult conversations still lay ahead, but she felt a little more confident about handling them. She couldn’t wait for the next time they were alone together, a moment when they wouldn’t have to talk business or raising money.

By Christmas, at the latest.

All in.

“There you are.” Lori’s voice startled them apart. “Who’s ready for some mulled wine?”

At times, it was still unreal to Misty that the
